Booking is where the plan becomes real. A little order here — what to book first, how to compare, what to read before you click — saves both money and headaches.

Timing: Book the Scarce Things First

There is no magic number of days before departure that guarantees the lowest price. What matters more is scarcity. Holiday dates, school breaks, festival weeks, small hotels and popular routes sell out or rise in price as they fill, so book those as soon as you are sure of your dates. Off-peak trips and big-city hotels usually give you more room to wait. When in doubt, book a refundable rate early and keep watching.

Flights

  • Search flexibly. Compare nearby dates and nearby airports before choosing.
  • Read the fare type. Basic fares may exclude seat choice, changes or a full-size carry-on.
  • Watch connection times. A cheap fare with a tight connection abroad is not a bargain if you miss it.
  • Use your exact passport name. The name on the ticket must match your ID.
  • Know the 24-hour window. U.S. rules give many tickets a short window to cancel after booking; check the airline’s terms.

Hotels and Rentals

Location is the first filter: a well-placed room saves time and transport costs every day of the trip. Then compare the total price for your stay. Under a Federal Trade Commission rule that took effect in May 2025, hotels and short-term rentals must show the total price including mandatory fees up front, which makes like-for-like comparison easier. Read the cancellation policy as carefully as the photos, and check whether breakfast, parking or Wi-Fi are included.

Keep It All in One Place

Create one folder, paper or digital, for every confirmation number, e-ticket, voucher and insurance policy. Add the hotel’s phone number and address in the local language for taxi drivers. Share a copy with someone at home. If anything changes — a schedule change from the airline, a hotel upgrade — update the folder the same day.

Prefer not to juggle a dozen confirmations? A travel specialist can book the whole itinerary and give you a single point of contact if anything goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a best day of the week to book a flight?

Fares change constantly with demand and seat inventory, so no single day is reliably cheapest. It is more useful to be flexible about travel dates and to set fare alerts for your route.

Should I book flights and hotels together?

Sometimes a package is cheaper, and sometimes booking separately is. Compare both. Packages can also be simpler to change through one point of contact.
